This painting on panel by Thomas Creswick was badly fried in a fire and remained in a fragile state for 30 years. The restoration work was painstaking with the priority in making the paint stucture stable. Laying of the badly blistered paint was the first stage and retaining as much of the original paunt as possible.
Once fixed, the process of removing the soot and the old varnish was undertaken. Filling of the paint losses and retouching and a final varnish brought this otherwise lost painting back to life.
The original frame was cleaned, repaired and reguilded. |
