Lining is probably the most important stage in the restoration process.It can ensure the longevity of the artwork and prevent further damage occuring. Backing the original canvas with a new material strenghtens the old canvas, supporting holes and tears and fixing loose flaking paint.
The lining (the bonding of a canvas support to the original) makes it possible to fill and retouch large damages.
